All VoidNet servers can be accessed via SSL. This means that the communication between your computer and our servers is secure. Find out more about SSL at Wikipedia.
Our servers are also linked via SSL. This means that an eavesdropper listening in on our upstream connection will only have access to an encrypted message stream.
Depending on your IRC client, you may have to import our root certificate. The root certificate is used to validate server certificates. If your system does not recognize the root certificate, it will reject our server certificates.
There is no harm in importing our root certificate. Be sure to verify that the fingerprint of the certificate that you download matches the fingerprint listed above (you may wish to load this page via secure HTTP to ensure that the fingerprint is not modified in transit.)
For maximum security, you should import both our root certificate and our CRL. The CRL is a list of certificates which are no longer valid.
Importing certificates and certificate revocation lists is beyond the scope of this document. Please consult your operating system documentation for more information.
You may wish to keep non SSL users out of your channel to prevent eavesdroppers. VoidNet servers have been patched to provide an additional channel mode, +S, which does just that.
Feel free to ask for help in the #voidnet channel.
